NH Vacation Photos

Last week we took our first family vacation (to the White Mountains area in New Hampshire) and had a good time, despite some rainy weather. Some photos will eventually end up in my Flickr photostream, but if you're into looking at people's vacation slides (and who isn't?!) you can view them here.

Open for Business

I wanted to officially announce that I have left my job to do consulting work full-time. So if you have a need for user experience, user interface, and/or web design, please feel free to contact me. In the coming months I'll be updating this site to better reflect my services, but in the meantime I'll be taking some much needed vacation time.

If LinkedIn is your thing, here's my page.

FAT Zine

You old BMX `zine makers out there (both of you...) might get a kick out of seeing the old issues of FAT Magazine -- the original printed versions from the 80s and 90s -- making their way online. Issue 16 has a few photos I took of Jim Cavanaugh and Rich Upjohn (page 15) and a mini-review of my old `zine (page 74).

New Site for Sinko

I have a new site for my music podcast Sinko: same URL, different look.

I was originally using Apple's iWeb because it was simple and worked well with Garageband (which I use to create each podcast) but uploading was another story: with each new episode iWeb recreated the entire site (which had to be uploaded), and it doesn't share common images used on the site. The new site is not only easier for me to update, but also has better archive browsing (including viewing podcasts by music genre) and the ability for you to leave comments.

The one change that may affect you (if you're a subscriber) is the RSS feed. The new URL is sinko.kieranchapman.net/rss.xml, so update your iTunes and other feeds as needed.

The Return of Sinko

I decided to start doing Sinko again: a weekly podcast that's basically a 5-song "mix tape" based on a theme or artist. Check it out if you're interested, and you can subscribe here.

Polite Grouch

While talking about Sesame Street...

Amelia: Why does Oscar always tell people "Get lost"?
Me: Because he's a grouch.
Amelia: Well, he should say "Get lost, please."

Wacky Photos

While digging around old files for this site, I came across two somewhat creepy photos of me. First is one I created years ago for reasons that escape me now, and it sorta looks like Jeremy:

not baby Kieran

The second was a creation that Jeff did, combining me and Jakob Nielsen:

not Jakob Chapman

(If you know me and know who Jakob is, you know why this is funny beyond just the goofy morphed photo.)

Speaking of Jakob, I somehow missed this page which is pretty funny: Jakob Nielsen’s Usability Fighting Styles.

Bahamas

Not to bore anybody with all 80+ photos from our vacation in the Bahamas (out of the 240+ I actually took), I put a few select shots on Flickr.

Father's Day Gift

Jill got me a very cool gift for Father's Day: some Star Wars artwork done by our friend (and amazing comic book artist) Craig Rousseau. (You can see a larger version of it on his site here.)

Weekend Wedding & Opening Day

This weekend my cousin Shane got married and it was probably the best time we've had at a wedding that wasn't ours. It was great weather for an outdoor ceremony, the reception was a lot of fun, and everything was nicely done.

One thing I hadn't seen before was their table assignment method: rather than being assigned a table by number, people were assigned by current and former Red Sox players. (Knowing my respect for the knuckleballer, my uncle was nice enough to pull some strings to get me seated at the Tim Wakefield table.) So congratulations to Shane and Tracey...hope they're having fun in Florida and Hawaii.

And on a related note, it's opening day!

Hollister Thomas Photography

A new site I built is now live: Hollister Thomas Photography. The original designer sort of disappeared so I took his initial rough design, finished the details, and built the site. It was a lot of fun to do, especially adding the Lightbox 2.0 slideshow and the page load/fade-in code (which I needed to do because of the way the content is centered on the page). And Hollister's photos are great, too!

Stolen "Losers of the Year"

Someone in Japan took part of a video I made ("Losers of the Year"), edited out all non-flatland stuff, dubbed some rap over it, and uploaded it to YouTube. While I'm not exactly thrilled that somebody used my video without permission and added their own music to it, what the heck...the video is over 10 years old.

I'm a 'grup'?

Up With Grups - The Ascendant Breed of Grown-Ups Who Are Redefining Adulthood (New York Magazine)

Although this article focuses a little too much on music and expensive jeans (might be the New York bias to it), and it ignores hip-hop culture altogether for just indie rock, overall it's nice to see that I'm not alone that...
  • I don't want "the corner office" in a suit-wearing job;
  • I still love listening to "non grown-up" music;
  • I'd rather my kids not listen to Barney or the Wiggles (I often play my iPod's 'alternative' playlist for Amelia, and she digs it);
  • I want to be great dad;
  • but I also don't want to lose my individuality (I'm not just a dad).

One thing I definitely relate to (and have talked about with Jill before) is this:
When I asked Hermelin her worst fear, she laughed and said, “Our kids are going to become Republicans.”
