Full Wire Video Now Online
I finally got around to putting my last riding video on YouTube. "Wire: 1989-1995" is a best-of compilation of the four videos I made during those years. Until now it's only been available on VHS, so rather than make a DVD version that nobody wants to buy I'll just put it online for free. If you like old school New England riding (especially flatland) you're in luck:

I don't really ride any more but I can still appreciate it. This video of Scotty Cranmer takes skatepark riding into videogame territory...

Stolen "Losers of the Year"
Someone in Japan took part of a video I made ("Losers of the Year"), edited out all non-flatland stuff, dubbed some rap over it, and uploaded it to YouTube. While I'm not exactly thrilled that somebody used my video without permission and added their own music to it, what the heck...the video is over 10 years old.

Keith McElhinney's Front Flip Flair
I haven't seen my old riding friend Keith McElhinney since he moved to Pennsylvania, but he's clearly been doing a lot of riding at Woodward. At the Dew Tour's 2006 stop in Denver, Keith pulled the world's first ever front flip flair (which he has named the lawn dart) -- check out the video. Update: Another video at the Dew Action Sports website.
Update #2: Keith's lawn dart won trick of the week on dewtour.com, getting him $5,000 in the process. Congrats, Keith! (And you're welcome for the votes...)

The end of newenglandflatland.com
I'm pulling the plug on one of my sites: New England Flatland will no longer be updated, and will now just be an archived site. Thanks to all the riders who supported it!

BK's BMX photos
Bill Keaggy, the guy behind my favorite riding `zine from the old days (it had such an amazing design, done before computer-generated layouts were common), has posted some old-school BMX photos of himself and others on Flickr.

This site has some flatland photos from the Final Exam Jam (covered here on eWire), including a cool kickflip hitchhiker shot of Brian used for the title graphic.

Zakim skatepark
There's a proposal for a $1.1 million 40,000 square foot skatepark to be built under the Zakim bridge.
"It's definitely going to put the city of Boston on the map of skateboarding," said Jon Evjy, 21, who works at a Commonwealth Avenue skate shop called the Underground.Naturally, I assumed that bikes would not be allowed in this new park. However, there might be some hope, since a member of the design committee is a BMXer:
It could draw thousands of skaters and BMX bike riders from around the country, sparking tournaments and national attention. Jody Stoddard, 34, a BMX rider and member of the conservancy's design committee, said he's taken road trips to skate parks in Toronto and upstate New York, and can see Boston becoming an East Coast skater haven.Only time will tell. (Also, time will tell if the park eventually becomes a level in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 6...)

Brian (my brother) continues to make the local papers regarding his part in a local documentary about flatland. This time it's the Brown Daily Herald and the Fall River Herald News. (Links to previous news articles can be found here.)

Yahoo News reported on the fake flatland video game story I did on eWire. Nice fact-checking going on there...

Well, that's disappointing. While riding with Brian this weekend, I shot a roll of film of him -- not trying to get anything in particular, but just to get back into shooting again, and maybe get a cool photo or two out of it.
Instead, I got nothing. Zilch. A disappointing pile of 24 photos. (OK, one of the non-riding photos wasn't total garbage...) It just proves that I still need a lot of practice. (I made some stupid mistakes on this roll -- I should've known better.)
So the next day I went to my mom's -- along with Brian, who doesn't go anywhere without his bike -- and was fooling around with my digital camera. And while the photo here isn't the best photo I've ever taken, it was better than anything from the day before. And it didn't cost a thing for film and developing...

Holy crap! A random entry on k10k pointed me to the personal site of Bill Keaggy. You old-time riders may remember Bill's `zine, ACC, which was by far the best BMX `zine back then (ever?).Labels: bmx

Biker Mirra Sues Acclaim Over 'Pornographic' Game
Pro BMX bike rider Dave Mirra has filed suit against video game publisher Acclaim Entertainment Inc., seeking more than $20 million in damages and claiming that a "pornographic" game featuring strippers on bikes hurt his image.

Wire: 1989-1995, the compilation video of the four riding videos I made years ago, is now complete. I'm going to be sending it out for duplication this weekend, and it'll be available to purchase from the New England Flatland site (and probably eWire, too).

Well, it looks like my brand on humor does not translate well into other languages. Besides the French BMX site that thought my flatland game "review" was real, there's now a Russian site that also thinks it's a real game. (I think Google and AltaVista need to work on building a sarcasm detector into their translation software...)

Apparently, some people didn't detect the sarcasm in my "BMX Freestyle Pro Flatland video game "review". A French riding site seems to be reporting it as actual news...

What's worse than ESPN's coverage of BMX? MTV. While flipping through the channels yesterday I had the pleasure of coming across MTV's Sports & Music Festival thing. While it's almost always good to see riding on TV, seeing the singer from Sugar Ray and complete tool Carson Daly do dirt jumping commentary was a little too much for me.

BMX fun with the Internet Movie Database!
A friend sent me this one: check out the amount of work Pat Romano was able to get after doing wheelies in Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Personally, I'm quite surprised.
Also, Rick Moliterno was more than just a "BMX stunt rider" in Rad -- after all, he DID have a line.

Riding is getting out of hand -- here's an MPEG of Adam Strieby doing a backflip tailwhip (1 MB). Unfortunately it's not a very good video (and Mat Hoffman attempted this many years ago) but it's still a damn crazy trick.

The new (May 2001) issue of Ride BMX magazine has a Hoffman ad that uses a photo of Kevin Robinson that I shot at the last Impact Contest. Not a great photo, but it's a pretty crazy trick.
