Polite Grouch
While talking about Sesame Street...
Amelia: Why does Oscar always tell people "Get lost"?
Me: Because he's a grouch.
Amelia: Well, he should say "Get lost, please."

Amelia Sledding Video
I added a new video of Amelia finally getting to use her sled. I hope to add new videos of the boy soon...

Websites for the Kids
I've discontinued the kids' websites on .mac (since I'm not going to renew my subscription) and now host them here. You can see the latest photos of them at amelia.kieranchapman.net and jeremy.kieranchapman.net. (The videos are there, too, but I haven't added new ones...yet.)

Bribery Works

1. "Amelia, can you please smile so we can take a photo for the Christmas card?"
2. "Look...if you smile so we can get a picture, you can have a mint."
3. Smiles come fast and furious for 5 full minutes.
4. Amelia celebrates receiving mint with "the yummy dance."

Quick update
Random updates and links:
- New websites for Amelia and Jeremy are up now.
- Everyone's seen Stephen Colbert's speech at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner by now, but still...
- Since I rarely update the Photos section of this site, I'm trying out Flickr to see if that gets me to take more photos. (My new camera is definitely helping.)
- Crossed of my list of "things that I should have been doing a long time ago that my friends probably assumed I was already doing": joined Netflix. After way too many scratched DVDs from our local Blockbuster, we've converted to Netflix and so far we've been very happy with the service and selection. (Plus it's nice to get some non-junk mail every once in a while.)

Amelia's site
Several people (non-family members, if you can believe it) have "complained" that Amelia's site hasn't been updated in a while. Very true ... expect some photos and/or video in the upcoming weeks.

New Amelia photos
I finally got around to adding some new photos of Amelia to her site. A couple were taken by Grandma on our trip to Nantucket, including the one above which looks like Amelia landed in one of her paintings...

The Great MidWife Controversy
The Great MidWife Controversy
This is absolutely disgusting, yet at the same time not surprising. Our daughter was born at home and we found out firsthand how unhelpful (more than usual!) our health care industry is when it comes to midwives and home births. And despite the fact that it's actually cheaper (total cost-wise) to have a home birth than a hospital birth, health insurance companies apparently don't want to save money. Insurance is big business, and I'll bet there's some shady stuff going on.
Our home birth was a wonderful, amazing, and safe experience. For someone who -- like most people -- would never have considered a home birth as an option, I'm now a big proponent. And as for Amelia, you can see for yourself that she's fine, happy and healthy.
our OB/GYN ditched us after she discovered that we were going to have the baby at home with a midwife. that's right, at least with certain doctors, the hippocratic oath be damned if you decide to go with a midwife....
my guess is that you're seeing what happens when you start messing around with a hospital's pregnancy profit center. all the margin is in the actual birth itself, so there's not much incentive for a doctor to pick up all the low margin prenatal work without the payoff.

New photos of Amelia

Per repeated family members' requests, I finally got around to adding some recent photos to Amelia's site...
January 14, 2004
Now that we're halfway through January, here's a quick update:
- Happy 2004
- A new video of Amelia has been added to her site: What's So Funny?
- I'm debating bringing eWire to an end. I don't seem to have the time or passion to keep it updated regularly, so I might close up shop and archive the site as it is. (I've already started moving some things over to this domain to save on hosting costs.)
- Damn it's cold!
- Only one month until pitchers and catchers report for spring training...
December 3, 2003
We were sent an email by our friend's brother, who showed off his Photoshop skills by modifying this photo of Amelia:

"You gonna finish those?"
Hey, I checked out Jill's website...pretty good stuff, although I don't understand how Amelia is so big...Jill and Kieran are so thin.
This picture was titled correctly on her site -- "about to cry" -- but I think it's because there's no more food in front of her!

Today Amelia turns one month old, so I thought I'd post this. I've been meaning to put this on the site to share a little about her birth & let people know that there's more than one option when having a baby.
Amelia was born at home: no hospital, no drugs, no doctors. This came as a surprise to anybody who knows us -- and, actually, it was sort of a surprise to us, too. Even after we decided not to have a hospital birth and go with a midwife instead, a home birth wasn't an option for us; instead, we'd go to a birthing center. Home births were a little too hippy/new-agey for us.
We had the same concerns you're probably thinking of ("What if something goes wrong?" "Isn't it going to be messy?"). But the more we learned about it and discussed it with our midwife (who was great), the more it actually made more sense to have our baby at home than anywhere else. So, long story short, Amelia was born at home, and it was a great experience -- it felt more spiritual than clinical.
A home birth might not be for everybody, but for those of you expecting a baby, look into your other options -- hospital vs. birthing center vs. home -- including midwives and doulas. I always assumed that you just go to the hospital to have a baby, because that's what everyone does. But there actually are other options -- choose the one that works best for you.
If anyone has any questions about having a home birth or how ours went, feel free to contact me.
