I'm a 'grup'?

Up With Grups - The Ascendant Breed of Grown-Ups Who Are Redefining Adulthood (New York Magazine)

Although this article focuses a little too much on music and expensive jeans (might be the New York bias to it), and it ignores hip-hop culture altogether for just indie rock, overall it's nice to see that I'm not alone that...
  • I don't want "the corner office" in a suit-wearing job;
  • I still love listening to "non grown-up" music;
  • I'd rather my kids not listen to Barney or the Wiggles (I often play my iPod's 'alternative' playlist for Amelia, and she digs it);
  • I want to be great dad;
  • but I also don't want to lose my individuality (I'm not just a dad).

One thing I definitely relate to (and have talked about with Jill before) is this:
When I asked Hermelin her worst fear, she laughed and said, “Our kids are going to become Republicans.”

Stop. Doing. This.

I can't wait for the trend of repeating something for effect with each individual word written as its own sentence to go away. I. Can't. Wait.

Advice for expectant dads

New father Todd Dominey has compiled some advice for expectant dads. Good stuff for me to review, although we're lucky enough that much of it is irrelevant since we're having another home birth (damn hippies):

  • rule of thumb: whenever the baby sleeps, you sleep (though this will be more challenging when the baby sleeps, we're tired, but Amelia is wide awake)
  • Have shopping for the next few weeks and any home projects done ahead of time
  • now's a good excuse for a new digital camera (hmmm, good idea...)

One tip he didn't mention: prepare meals ahead of time. Buy some plastic containers, cook up a bunch of food, and prepare homemade "frozen dinners" to have in your refrigerator. Since you'll have very little free time to prepare and eat meals, you'll be happy to have plenty of microwave-ready food at your disposal.

the donut burger

Along the lines of the (fictitious) Good Morning Burger from the Simpsons ("We take eighteen ounces of sizzling ground beef, and soak it in rich, creamery butter, then we top it off with bacon, ham, and a fried egg. We call it the Good Morning Burger.") comes "Baseball's Best Burger":

Minor league team the Gateway Grizzlies will be selling a donut burger that "will include a hamburger topped with sharp cheddar cheese and two slices of bacon -- all between a 'bun' of Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donuts." It sounds gross, the photo looks gross, and I can't imagine people enjoying this "meal and a dessert in one."

sports uniform lettering

When an article combines baseball and typography, it gets my attention. Welcome to Arch Madness on ESPN.com discusses vertically arched lettering on sports uniforms and includes plenty of links to example images:
The lettering for player names on most jerseys is radially arched, which means the letters are fanned out to form a crescent. [B]ut with vertically arched lettering, each individual letter receives its own distinct degree of "uphill" or "downhill" slant, depending on its place within the player's name.

Microsoft designs the iPod package

Microsoft designs the iPod package
I first saw this in YouTube, but it was removed from the site...perhaps by the Microsoft employee who created it? No matter -- when something is this good, once it's released onto the web, it's not going away. "It's funny because it's true."

Spring training

I had a nice surprise when I logged onto My Yahoo today. My normally empty Scoreboard module was actually showing something:

Spring training is officially here!
