Ah, AT&T Broadband, lazy monopoly. Only one week before someone can come out and fix/replace my cable modem? Great!
Postscript:
My modem came back to life, so I called AT&T to save them the trouble of coming out (since I wasn't going to be home). After attempting several different paths through their voicemail maze over three days with no luck -- I always either ended up with a busy signal or just plain got disconnected -- I sent them an email instead, informing them that their voicemail system seems to be on the fritz. Their reply? "We feel that the best method to proceed in your case would be to please contact us by phone..."

Co-worker and emo-curious friend Jeff created this disturbing image of the bastard child of myself and "usability guru" Jakob Nielsen. (And you thought the baby picture was bad...)

Holy crap. Someone has actually started creating a map of Springfield (as in The Simpsons' Springfield). I'm not sure how they got all these details, but it's pretty thorough. (And people thing I'm a big Simpsons geek!)
Playing it foolish (by Hiawatha Bray)
"The recording industry has spent millions of dollars ... to make its product harder and less convenient to use. So far they're succeeding, the fools. Their victory will cripple legitimate music distribution over the Internet, while ensuring that online music piracy remains as popular as ever."

I have a bunch of stuff to add to this site, but unfortunately I've been too busy to actually do it. So here's something quick just to fill up space: Modern Humorist's Excerpts from The Foreigner's Guide to America is both hilarious and depressing.

Early Christmas present to myself: I picked up Apple's iPod (it was really just a matter of time). It's lived up to the hype: fast, easy to use, holds tons of music, and is very cool. Even the Windows guys at work like it.
A friend of mine pointed out (correctly) that I really am Apple's target market: totally into digital music (iPod, iTunes), digital video (iMovie), putting all this stuff online (iTools) -- I use 'em all. Geek.

Crush on Liz Phair: still intact. In lieu of a new album, the
Gap ad in which she stars helped renew it ... despite the fact that she's singing some crappy Supertramp song.

Study: Half of UK Smokers Think Habit Is Safe
"Forty-six percent of Britain's smokers believe their habit must be safe or the government would not let cigarettes be advertised." One hundred percent of those smokers are idiots.

Now let me get this straight: I pay $10 per month to access RealNetworks' MusicNet service. This gives me access to a limited number of artists' catalogs. But I never actually own the music files -- I can't put them on an MP3 player or burn them to a CD. And I can only access 100 songs per month. Yeah, that sounds reasonable -- sign me up!

I'm so not punk -- I took the test that proved it. (It turns out I'm more ska than punk...) Also, apparently my hillbillly name is Earl Ray Stanton, but everyone calls me "Geech".
This summer Jill & I took a trip to California -- we spent a week driving from San Diego to San Francisco. On the way we shot tons of photos (which have yet to find their way onto this site) and lots of video. We still haven't edited the video yet, either, but this weekend I threw together a short preview. iMovie is lots of fun...
